Sunday: Race Day
Travis Pastrana takes home another medal for Subaru Rally Team USA after finishing second in the Rally Car Racing Finals at X Games 15. Travis was up against some tough competition and, while leading the final race, clipped a concrete barrier with his wheel, damaging his steering. Although the damage was minimal, the car was rendered undriveable and pastrana was forced to concede the win to 1999 Indianapolis 500 champion Kenny Brack. Although a disappointment for Travis Pastrana, who had his heart set on taking home the gold, second place is a superb result.
Subaru Rally Team USA's #40, Dave Mirra, had a very impressive run as well with some of the best driving he has exhibited all year. Mirra put on an excellent performance in the quarterfinal, racing neck-and-neck with event victor, Kenny Brack. After completing half the course, the two were essentially tied and it was only toward the very end of the run that Mirra lost time to the seasoned rallycross veteran. Dave Mirra should be proud of his efforts and it will be exciting to see more of his skills at the next rally.
Ken Block has been hoping to add gold to his collection of X Games medals, but unfortunately this goal was not reached this year. Ken's troubles started early today when, during the practice lap, he clipped a curb and rolled his car. The damage was superficial and the SRT USA techs were quickly able to restore the car to race-ready condition. Part of the X Games journalistic coverage included reporters riding along inside the cars. Ken Block, determined to take the win, pushed hard from the start of his quarterfinal run. After completing half of the course, he bumped into a concrete barrier, damaging a wheel and a rear driveshaft. This caused a loss of power and, while approaching the jump, Ken feared he could not build enough speed to safely span the gap. As there was a reporter riding with him, Ken opted to bypass the jump and continue on to complete the course. Unbeknownst to Block, failure to complete the jump resulted in his disqualification. Unaware of his predicament, ken continued to race and finished the lap five seconds ahead of his competition.
Subaru Rally Team USA is back on the Rally America circuit later this month, competing at the Ojibwe Forests Rally in Bemidji, Minnesota. There is no doubt that Pastrana and Block will be dueling for first place. Don't forget to check back during the event for the latest updates.
